My grandfather was personal jeweler for the King of Denmark before coming to the U.S. in the 1920’s where he started working for Georg Jensen in New York City. Eventually he moved and opened his own jewelry shop in downtown Albany. My father also worked in the jewelry trade and moved the business out to Colonie in the mid 1960s.
How the times have changed!
Not only do I work at the bench (just like 100 years ago) but I have been working with CAD design for custom jewelry items since 2008. Jewelry manufacturing has become hi-tech. Lasers allow us to weld where we would never have dared because of fear of damaging delicate stones. Bench microscopes allow me to set stones the size of salt grains. Power gravers allow absolute control of setting, engraving, and bright cutting. In the hands of a master jeweler these tools allow me to produce the most amazing jewelry. Each item a tiny piece of art.
